Historical Context

The Albert R. Stone collection of the Rochester Museum & Science Center consists of local images made for the Rochester Herald and the Democrat and Chronicle between 1904 and 1936. Albert R. Stone, staff photographer for those newspapers, took pictures of newsworthy events and the people and places associated with those events.

Scope of Collection

The collection contains black-and-white photographs from the early 20th century. The images relate to a variety of topics in the Rochester region. In particular, there are many photographs relating to transportation in the area, namely the construction of the Erie Barge Canal, the Rochester Subway, and many bridges.  In addition to many construction views,  there are portraits of the laborers.
