Historical Context

Hurricane Agnes swept across the Middle Atlantic states causing heavy, constant rain in June of 1972.  Record-breaking floods followed in late June, including in Allegany County, where the Genesee River crested at 23 feet on June 21 and crested again at 24 feet on June 23.

This collection was supported in part with federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds allocated to the New York State Library by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).
