Historical Context

Skaneateles is located in the Finger Lakes region of New York state. Its name is Iroquoian meaning “long lake” a reference to Skaneateles Lake which borders the south side of the town. The village was formally incorporated in 1833. The area has been a popular tourist destination and vacation spot for over a century.

Scope of Collection

The Skaneateles Library Association Collection is a broad sampling of historical items related to Skaneateles, its community, and famous individuals connected to the town. The items range from photographs of the town, letters from Abraham Lincoln, and even a poem written by Anne Frank. There are postcards depicting Skaneateles locations. Some of the documents relate to the history of the library, including a library card from 1899 and late 19th century catalog.
